A theme park built on the promise of perfection opened its gates to chaos nobody had planned for.

An Invitation Turns Into a Flood

Walt Disney provided a specific group of journalists, financial supporters and officials with tickets for a private preview of his new amusement park in Anaheim, California - but a total of approximately 28 000 people arrived at the gates, which exceeded the planned capacity. By using counterfeit or copied tickets that people had distributed throughout Southern California before the event, thousands of unauthorized guests entered the park. As a result the facility was not prepared to manage the crowd.

Heat, Shortages, and Breakdowns

On Main Street, workers had applied the asphalt shortly before the gates opened - the material was not fully hard. In the high summer temperatures, the surface became soft and caught the narrow heels of women's footwear. Due to a gas leak, staff had to close multiple sections of the park, like areas in Fantasyland, during the afternoon. When guests consumed the available supplies, vendors ran out of food and beverages. Because a plumbing workers' strike forced Disney to choose between building toilets or water dispensers, there were few operational drinking fountains. To many observers, it appeared that the owner restricted free water to increase the sales of soft drinks. And many of the mechanical attractions stopped functioning. According to reports from that time, the air was approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If those reports are accurate, the heat made the experience very unpleasant for visitors, though some modern records of weather data indicate that the official high temperature was lower.

Walt Disney wore a formal suit as he moved through the park during a hot day. At the same time he participated in a live television broadcast on ABC which presented the dedication to many viewers across the country. In some records researchers suggest that 70 million people watched the program, but other records claim that more than 90 million people watched it. By all accounts the broadcast is one of the most viewed live events from that period. To host the show the network employed Ronald Reagan, who worked as a television performer at that time, along with Art Linkletter & Bob Cummings. On the screen the footage changed between famous guests and groups of individuals who stood very close to one another. And in multiple shots, the viewers saw clear evidence that workers had not yet completed construction on certain areas of the ground.

"Black Sunday" and the Aftermath

With the passage of time, staff members and observers began to refer to the day as "Black Sunday". On the following morning, journalists wrote reports that focused on the high density of visitors, machines that did not function and rows of people who stood in place for long periods without receiving service. Due to those events, some reports state that Disney viewed the opening as a failure. For a period of time, he was not willing to invite the same critical reporters back to the property. By making this choice, he allowed his staff to fix the problems that were easy for guests to see.

In spite of the initial disorganized conditions, visitors responded positively to the park. By the end of two months, approximately one million people had entered Disneyland and within ten years the location was among the most frequented destinations for tourists globally. On the ground workers replaced the soft asphalt or allowed it to harden correctly. To ensure functionality, workers repaired the water features and the infrastructure systems. The earlier trouble regarding the distribution of fake tickets became a minor detail of the past instead of a central event. It is a fact that the park started as a hot and incomplete site with many complications - but this project transformed into the model that almost all contemporary theme parks created in later years attempt to copy.
