A quiet post on an internet newsgroup gave away something that would end up connecting billions of people for free.

No Fanfare, Just a Post

On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners Lee made the World Wide Web available to the public. There was no event for the media or presentation in a large hall at that time. The scientist sent a brief text to a newsgroup for hypertext users from the laboratory at CERN. He explained that he had created a system that allows people to share pages through links. By sending this message, he encouraged other people to use the software.

It was a quiet start for a technology that would later affect many aspects of society - but the web was already in development for multiple years before this announcement.

Too Many Systems, Too Little Time

The goal for Berners Lee was to fix a specific issue - at CERN, thousands of scientists from various nations worked together - those individuals used many types of computers, operating systems and file types. For those scientists, it was difficult to find and share data across the different systems. To solve this Berners Lee wanted to find a way to link research and documents that was less complex.

In March 1989, Berners Lee wrote a plan for a system that used the internet to connect text. On the cover of this document, his manager Mike Sendall is widely reported to have written a comment: "Vague, but exciting..." As a result, CERN did not provide money for the work as an official project right away - but Sendall gave Berners Lee permission to spend time on the experiments.

In the period ending in 1990, Berners Lee finished the development of the primary systems for the web - those systems are HTML for the arrangement of pages, HTTP for the movement of data & URLs for the naming of locations. At CERN, he also built the initial software for browsing, the initial server and the initial web page using a NeXT computer. On this hardware a written message stated: "This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!"

Hypertext is a concept that existed previously but the structure that Berners Lee created is different because it is accessible and lacks complexity. It is a system that does not need a primary manager or approval from one person in charge. To participate any person is able to operate a server, produce a page and connect to other items on the network.

Free for the World

When the year 1993 arrived, the web experienced a significant change in its development. On 30 April 1993, CERN made the World Wide Web software accessible without any requirement for payment. By doing this they released the code for people to use or modify. Because of this choice, the web is not a system that one company owns and it is able to grow at a high speed.

And during the same year, NCSA Mosaic made the web less difficult for people to use. It achieved this by including visual images and a layout that is helpful for users. With those changes, the web is no longer a tool that only researchers use but it is part of the daily activities of the general public.

Berners-Lee is not the owner of a patent for the web and he did not turn it into a business that functions as a single provider. He assisted in the management of public web standards. For this purpose he became the first director of the World Wide Web Consortium when it began in 1994.

There are billions of individuals who use the web so that they can share information, study, perform jobs and maintain contact. Its history is not one that started with a public event meant to attract attention. It is a process that began with a small announcement in 1991 and a commitment to openness that shaped the digital age.
