A satellite the size of a beach ball rewired how the world watched itself.
A Small Sphere, A Big Ambition
On July 10, 1962, a Delta rocket launched from Cape Canaveral during the hours before sunrise. It transported a satellite that weighed 171 pounds, which is the same weight as a piece of luggage for a traveler - this object, named Telstar 1, is a sphere that features solar panels and antennas on its outer surface. In appearance the machine is small, although the goal for the project is to transmit television signals over the Atlantic Ocean for the first time.
By design the concept is basic and introduces a major change to communication. If radio waves are unable to curve around the shape of the Earth then a satellite in a stable path around the planet is able to receive a signal from one continent and send it to another. For this specific reason, Bell Labs & NASA constructed Telstar 1. To achieve this they coordinated with ground stations that are located in Andover, Maine and Pleumeur Bodou, France.
First Signals Across the Ocean
When the first test occurred later on that day, engineers transmitted an image of a flag and a brief sound signal using the satellite. As this was a trial, the result showed that the technology was functional. On July 23, which is eleven days later, Telstar 1 facilitated the first broadcast of live television for the public between the United States and Europe. And this event connected speakers, pictures and viewers on two continents in a manner that did not exist previously.
A Shadow Over the Breakthrough
But the success of Telstar 1 was affected by a separate event - due to the Starfish Prime nuclear test, which the United States conducted high over the Pacific Ocean one day before the launch, radiation levels in the Van Allen belts increased. Because of this radiation, the electronic components of the satellite experienced gradual damage. There were issues with the command systems that started late in 1962. On February 21, 1963, the transmitter on Telstar 1 stopped functioning.
Its working life was short, but its impact was lasting. Telstar completed roughly 400 transmission sessions and helped prove that live communication across continents was no longer a dream. Telstar 1 still circles Earth as a silent relic, joined by Telstar 2, a reminder of the moment the planet suddenly felt much smaller.
